Saturday 05 May 2012 Housing for the 99%From: Housing for the 99% Millions of us are being ripped off, paying extortionate rents for insecure and poor quality housing. The number of households renting privately has increased by almost a million in the last five years alone. Average rents for a two bedroom in more than half of English local authorities now exceed a third of average local take home pay. In London, private rents increased by 7% last year alone, almost double the average London wage increase. Now, rather than addressing high rents, government caps on benefits risk making thousands of people homeless. It's time to stand up to greedy landlords and a government that blames it on the poorest and demand decent, secure and genuinely affordable housing for all of us. Join us on Sunday 13 May to start planning to fight back. When: Come along at 11am to discuss what’s wrong with the system and how to fix it. Bring some food to share for lunch and afterwards we’ll start planning some creative action to help make it happen. Who we are We’re a few people who are sick of being ripped off by greedy landlords and angry that high rents and benefit caps are making people homeless. We don’t think we’re the only ones.
